A Case of Congenital Lobar Emphysema with Ventricular Septal Defect

Abstract
Congenital lobar emphysema is characterized by overdistension of one or more lobes of an infant's lung caused by trapping of air within the effected area.
It may cause severe respiratory distress in early infant and the severity of respiratory distress depends on the size of the overdistended lobe and the degree of mediastinal shift and resultant compression of surrounding lung tissue.
The most frequently involved site is the left upper lobe.
In the most cases, the radiographic findings are clear. The affected lobe is overdistended and mediastinum is shifted to the contralateral side. With upper lobe emphysema, secondary compression of the ipsilateral lower lobe is an important
findings
to
look for.
Excision of the affected lobe is generally indicated. But if symptoms are minimal or absent, conservative management shoud be attempted.
We have experienced a case of congenital lobar emphysema with ventricular septal defect, documented by serial roentgenogram for follow up study. We present this with a brief review and related literature.
